The West Fargo Wasps are a team of the Red River Hockey League, where they have played since joining the league as an expansion team for the 1978-79 season. Based in West Fargo, North Dakota, the Wasps play their home games at the 600-seat Veterans Memorial Arena.

History[]

The Wasps are the third MAHL team to hail from the state of North Dakota, following their Red River league-mates the Fargo Titans and Grand Forks Jets.

The Wasps have won 2 Red River League Titles (1984 & 1988) and appeared in 1 Super Series (1988). In their 1984 Red River League Title win, the Wasps became the first team in MAHL history to win a League Title the season after a last-place finish.

Culture[]

Traditions[]

Wasp fans are known for their passion, but they have one particular piece of clothing that sets them apart from most. Members of the Wasps Nest are famous around the MAHL for their black & yellow striped overalls that they wear to every game.

West Fargo has entered to "Black Betty" by Ram Jam since their inception. Taking to the ice while their fans sing "Bam-ba-lam, Whoa, Black Betty!"

Walter Wasp[]

Beginning in 1986, the Wasps have a body-costumed mascot named Walter Wasp, a black and gold wasp. Walter can be seen on the ice before and in the stands during Wasps home games at Veterans Memorial Arena, as well as at away games against the Fargo Titans at John E. Carlson Coliseum.

Rivalry Trophies[]

Metropolitan Bowl[]

The Wasps compete against their metropolitan area rivals the Dilworth Demons, Fargo Titans and Moorhead Huskies for the Metropolitan Bowl, awarded to the team which finishes the highest in the standings at the end of the season.

Currently, the Wasps hold the Bowl, having won it back in 1987 and holding it the following two year. The Titans and Wasps are tied for the lead the all-time trophy series, 4-4-0-0, with the Demons and Huskies not yet having won the Cup as of 1989.
