The Veterans Cup is a rivalry trophy awarded since 1962 to the winner of the season series between the Minneapolis Millers and the St. Paul Victorias of the Twin Cities Hockey League, representing the two primary cities in the metropolitan area. The two are also Minnesota's largest city and its capital. In years where the season series is tied, whichever team has scored more goals in their meetings wins the Cup.
Currently, Minneapolis holds the Cup, having won it back in 1988. The Millers lead the all-time trophy series, 16-11.
History[]
In 1962, the Twin Cities Hockey League split into two divisions, with each team only playing one interdivisional game per regular season. As the Millers were assigned to the West Division and the Victorias to the East, the two teams decided to continue their rivalry, adding a trophy to it to honor US military veterans from the Twin Cities. When the Twin Cities League returned to a single-table format for the 1971-72 season, the Veterans Cup adopted its present format of head-to-head or goal difference to determine the winner.
Rivalry Facts[]
Although the Millers lead the trophy series, the V's outpace the Mighty Millers in Kellogg Cup wins (4-3), Twin Cities League Titles (19-15) and Super Series appearances (15-11).
Both teams have met in the playoffs 8 times, with the Victorias leading the playoff series 5-3.
