History Hibbing Greyhounds (IRHL) (1921-present)

The Hibbing Greyhounds are a team of the Iron Range Hockey League, where they have played since joining the league as an expansion team for the 1920-21 season. Based in Hibbing, Minnesota, the Greyhounds play their home games at the 3,500-seat Hibbing Memorial Building.

History[]

The Greyhounds are the first MAHL team to have an official namesake sponsor; Greyhound Bus Lines, founded in Hibbing in 1914 and now America's largest intercity bus transportation provider.

The Greyhounds have won 4 Kellogg Cups, 14 Iron Range League Titles, & have appeared in 2 Super Series (1969 & 1988).

Culture[]

Knockin' On Heaven's Door[]

As a way to celebrate Hibbing's own, Bob Dylan, the Greyhounds have played his hit song "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" during the second intermission of every Hounds home game since 1973. It is tradition for Hibbing fans to stand arm in arm and sway side to side while singing along.

Lyrics:

"Ooh-ooh-ooh, Ooh-ooh-ooh, Ooh-ooh-ooh

Mama take this badge off of me, I can't use it anymore, It's getting dark, too dark to see, I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door

Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door

Mama put my guns in the ground, I can't shoot them anymore, That long black cloud is comin' down, I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door

Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door

Ooh-ooh-ooh"

Greyson II[]

Beginning in 1976, the Greyhounds have a live mascot named Greyson. A living Greyhound, Greyson wears a blue racing jacket with silver piping and a silver "H" for Hibbing. Greyson is a mainstay at every Hounds home game at the Hibbing Memorial Building.

The current Greyson is the second dog to wear the jacket after the original Greyson passed away in 1985.

Rivalry Trophies[]

Quad City Trophy[]

The Greyhounds compete with the Virginia Royals, Eveleth Redbirds and Chisholm Flames for the Quad City Trophy, awarded every year to the team which finishes highest among them in the Iron Range League standings.

Currently, the Royals hold the trophy, having won it back in 1989. The Royals lead the all-time trophy series 14-9-6-1.

Red Hills Trophy[]

In addition, the Greyhounds compete with the Grand Rapids Moose for the Red Hills Trophy, awarded to the team which wins their head-to-head series each year (or, if the teams are tied, the one with the higher goal differential).

Currently, the Moose hold the trophy, having won the inaugural trophy series in 1989.
